It's PND and Zayn time

After my blog about Drake, just yesterday, I thought it was time to talk about the first artist that got signed to his label: PARTYNEXTDOOR, PND in short. He’s currently trending on the global charts with two tracks. One’s called “Run Up” and is, very recognizably, a Major Lazer produced track, which also features Nicki Minaj. The other is called “Still Got Time”, which features Zayn.

PARTYNEXTDOOR has been keen on collaborating, and has done so with various artists, since his debut in 2013. It’s led to him releasing EPs and album at a steady pace and got him writing for others.

As I just said, “Run Up” sounds like any other Major Lazer track, so if you like his sound, you’ll like this song too. So, I’ll just zoom in on “Still Got Time” with Zayn. The best way I can describe that song is that it sounds like Drake meets Craig David. I seriously think the first few notes that are sung, sound like the beginning of a Drake song before turning into that typical intonation of lyrics that I always link to Craig David.

I know that Zayn wanted to move towards r&b with his solo sound, but this is different from his other material. I think that the collaboration with PARTYNEXTDOOR works out really well for him. It’s a really nice song with a nice lyrical angle, but it did take me a few listens to get into it. I think this has mainly to do with the Drake sound.

I’m not a big fan of the ‘singing’ that Drake does on his tracks. To me, it always has a bit of whining sound to it, but I know it’s very popular in hip hop. I also spot this at the very beginning of the track and it’s putting me off a bit, until it starts to sound more like Craig David. That’s when this track is very interesting to me.

PARTYNEXTDOOR also dropped his own remix of the Bruno Mars hit ”That’s What I Like”, recently, As I’m preparing to catch one of the Bruno Mars shows soon, I had to give this a listen too, of course and I can highly recommend it. I still love the original better, but this comes in at a close second.
